Biographical Note:

Robert M. Gates served as U.S. secretary of defense from December 2006 to July 2011. Prior to that, Dr. Gates earned his Ph.D. in Russian and Soviet History from Georgetown University (1974) and had a long and distinguished career of government service, including in the U.S. Air Force, as deputy national security adviser to President George H.W. Bush (1989-91), and as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1991-93). From 2002 to 2006, he was president of Texas A&M University (2002-06). Since 2012, he has served as chancellor of William & Mary.
