Carolyn Mason

Ph.D. student, Department of Anthropology

Research Interests:
Carolyn’s interests focus on how minority groups use food as traditional medicines to treat and heal themselves, especially in the context of the biomedical health care system. Her ultimate goal is to engage in research that highlights and promotes the voices of those who have not had the opportunity to tell their own stories.

Road to the Moody School:
Carolyn earned her B.A. in anthropology (honors) from George Mason University in 2020. Beyond her campus studies, she has explored some aspects of her research in a podcast called Bigger Fish to Fry, which focuses on how the food traditions of enslaved people affected the health and diet of both enslaved people in the past and their descendants today. In her free time, she likes to crochet and play (“badly”) video games.
