Fulbright U.S. Student Program

Founded in 1946 to foster greater mutual understanding and cross-cultural dialogue, the Fulbright is the United States’ premiere cultural and education exchange program with more than 140 participating countries.  The Fulbright U.S. Student Program funds graduate study, independent research, and teaching English abroad.  Each grant offers tremendous opportunities to create deep and meaningful connections around the world.  Students of all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.  Undergraduate students typically apply in the fall semester of their senior year.  Undergraduate alumni are welcome to apply following graduation.

SMU undergraduates have received awards to Belgium, Finland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Malta, South Korea, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, and elsewhere.

Fulbright awards include transportation to and from the host country, a stipend to cover living expenses, and health benefits.

Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. citizen or national

  • Must have a conferred bachelor’s degree prior to the start of the program

  • Must meet country-specific and award-specific eligibility requirements
