Digital Preservation

As SMU Libraries and its special collections units collect born-digital materials, there is a need for an effective digital preservation program since there is no original physical item to re-digitize if the born-digital item is lost or corrupted.

SMU Libraries has adopted best practices to ensure the integrity, authenticity, and long-term preservation of digital and born-digital materials in our care. The digital preservation advisory group evaluates and reviews the policies and procedures for the program and helps promote the need for robust digital preservation practices across campus.

The digital preservation program adheres to the SMU Libraries Digital Preservation Policy and the SMU Libraries Digital Preservation Framework. Files are stored on the Rosetta software platform. Rosetta comprises a secure digital archive server backed up in two locations by SMU’s Office of Information Technology. Files are also placed on Microsoft Azure as a tertiary backup.
