Total Orientation Process
This checklist is provided to help you quickly and easily complete all required elements of your Total Orientation Process with SMU. If you have any questions, you may go back to the tutorial content to review the information.
New Staff will be contacted directly by HR's Talent Acquisition & Management Team at the time of your offer.First Day of Employment
The following were provided to you electronically and should be completed prior to your first day of employment:
- Offer Letter
- I-9 Authorization to Work (Use your legal name as it appears on your social security card.) The document itself will be completed in the HR Office. Review a list of acceptable documents to bring with you to the HR office as proof of identity.
- New Hire Paperwork - New Employees will access this via their online onboarding portal or directly from HR.
Directions to obtain the following will be provided at HR on your first day:
- SMU ID & SMU ID Card
- Form W-4 tax withholding
- Direct Deposit Enrollment
- Parking permit Instructions
- Other new hire forms that may be required for your position
First Week of Employment:
Required:
- Employee Statement: signed and deliver in person to Human Resources or completed in the online onboarding portal
- Beneficiary Designation (Employer-provided Basic Life, optional Supplemental Life and optional AD&D coverage): Online via The Standards' Online Beneficiary Designation System. The Online Beneficiary Designation Guide will walk you through the process. Company Key: standardbendes

Within 90 days of first day of employment:
New Staff will be notified by email from Lawroom when the following training tutorials are assigned and ready to be accessed:
- Harassment and Discrimination Prevention: complete the tutorial via Law Room; allow up to 90 minutes
- Data Security and Privacy: complete the tutorial via Law Room; allow approximately 30 minutes
- SMU Program for the Protection of Minors: complete the tutorial via Law Room; allow approximately 60 minutes
FAQ for LawRoom
- 90 Day Performance Check-in: The new employee's manager will provide feedback on the employee's progress toward the end of the probationary period via an automated email from My.SMU. New employees and their managers should be having regular on-going conversations regarding performance and development during the probationary period and beyond.
