Your Life, AD&D, and Disability Benefits Guide

Full-time and part-time faculty and staff have the opportunity to purchase AD&D Insurance to reduce the financial hardships associated with death or serious injury resulting from an accident.  No benefit is payable in the event of death due to an illness.

  • Coverage is available in $10,000 increments up to $500,000 and you have the option to purchase individual or family coverage.  The amount you select is referred to as the Principal Sum. In the event of your death, your Principal Sum (subject to the age-based reductions addressed below) will be paid to your designated beneficiaries.
  • If you elect Family Coverage, your spouse is covered for 60% of your Principal Sum; each eligible child is covered for 20% of your Principal Sum, up to $25,000 maximum per child. In the event of the death of your spouse or child, the benefit will be payable to you.
  • Eligible children include your unmarried adopted, foster, or step-children under age 25, who are in your custody or who are physically or mentally disabled, and under your supervision. Unmarried natural or adopted grandchildren, under age 25, who are financially dependent upon you for support may also be covered.
  • AD&D premiums are deducted from your pay on a pre-tax basis.

Beneficiary Designations

If you enrolled in voluntary AD&D Insurance, it is very important that you designate one or more beneficiaries.  You will complete your designations via The Standard’s Online Beneficiary Designation System.  The Online Beneficiary Designation Guide will walk you through the process. You will need the Company Key:  standardbendes.  You will find helpful information in the Beneficiary Designation FAQ.

How to Calculate the Cost of AD&D Insurance

Divide your Principal Sum by 10,000. Multiply the result by the applicable AD&D Premium Rate (below) to determine your monthly premium.

Example: Monthly employee electing $300,000 Individual Coverage → ($300,000 divided by 10,000 = 30 x .20 = $6.00 per month).

AD&D Premium Rates

(Per $10,000 unit)
Individual Coverage: $0.20 Monthly - $0.09 Bi-Weekly
Family Coverage: $0.35 Monthly - $0.1615 Bi-Weekly

Age-Based Coverage Reductions

Your Principal Sum will be reduced to 50% of your pre-age 75 Principal Sum amount at age 75.  Your Principal Sum will be reduced to 25% of the pre-age 75 amount at age 80.
