The Advising Appointment
Students are required to meet with their assigned advisor at least once a semester before enrollment for the next term to plan courses for the upcoming semester. During these meetings, advisors will guide students through selecting a Lyle major, assist with subset requirements for their desired major, and make referrals to additional support services if needed.
Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their advisor in a timely manner. To help and engage in the advising process, we recommend that students prepare a list of class ideas, questions and concerns before each meeting. They should make sure to inform their advisor about their academic progress, course selection and intellectual/career goals. We advise students to check their Degree Progress Report (DPR) on my.smu.edu, at least once a semester, to ensure that all of their information (majors, minors, credit hours, graduation term, etc.) is correct.
After their advising appointment, students need to remember that they:
- Are responsible for their enrollment in classes
- Need to enroll in the courses that were discussed with their advisor
- Make schedule changes by the add/drop deadline (fifth class day of each semester)
- Withdraw from courses by the deadline if necessary
First-year students who want to take advantage of the grade replacement policy need to discuss that decision with their advisor and fill out the appropriate form.
