Biography
Gary A. Evans received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and physics from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA. After a postdoctoral year at Caltech, he worked for R&D Associates, Marina Del Rey, CA, and was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Washington. He has worked at the Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, CA; TRW (now Northrop Grumman), Redondo Beach, CA and RCA Laboratories (now SRI), Princeton, NJ. In 1992 he joined Southern Methodist University as a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. He was a co-founder of Photodigm and Photon Sciences, a past President of the SMU Faculty Senate and a past member of the SMU Board of Trustees. He has more than 300 publications and 40 patents related to semiconductor lasers and photonics and is a co-editor of the book Surface Emitting Semiconductor Lasers and Arrays. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for “contributions to the development, fabrication, and understanding of semiconductor lasers,” and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He has served and continues to serve on numerous national and international technical committees and was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics.
