Pioneering research to reduce human impact on the environment

A recipient of the SMU Second Century and Discovery scholarships, Kevin Nguyen ’24 takes pride in his responsibility to expand research at SMU. Working with Chemistry Professor David Son and other students – undergraduate and graduate – Nguyen synthesizes plastics to be environmentally safe and affordable.

Nguyen received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry this May. His current work focuses on the research of a compound called HEMI and biodegradable polymers.

Initially, Nguyen chose to study at SMU for its excellent academic reputation and proximity to his home. Since coming to SMU, he has been profoundly impacted by supportive faculty who cultivate a caring environment.

“The faculty drives the SMU experience,” said Nguyen. “My time working with Dr. Son in his research lab has been the most rewarding because of his kindness. In fact, a sense of compassion and care for students is shared by all professors in the Chemistry Department.”

In addition to his scholarships, Nguyen received an Engaged Learning Fellowship, which allows undergraduate students to design and pursue capstone-level projects in research, service and creative activity. Fellows receive funding and coaching from faculty mentors for their projects and have multiple opportunities to share their work with the public. Nguyen presented at conferences of the American Chemical Society and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research.

Through his presentations and his work in the lab, Nguyen says he has gained confidence in his research and ability to communicate with others. Both will support him in his future pursuits as a Ph.D. student continuing to work on polymers.

“Donors, scholarships and fellowships play a huge role in allowing students to pursue their dreams,” Nguyen said. “They give us the opportunity to focus on our studies without worrying about expenses. That relief is crucial to a student’s success in life.”
