Lucid Dreams is a single player puzzle platformer for PC, developed in Unreal Development Kit. A team of 12 developers developed the game over the course of 6 months. While roaming through a dream-like environment, the player must collect glowing Z’s to unlock new levels. Gameplay involves collecting pick-ups in a surreal environment by walking on walls. We chose this project in an effort to come together as a team and create a game that players would enjoy and find challenging.
The team overcame a drastic redesign of the game 8 weeks before release to create a more focused gameplay experience. We focused on proven technology and gameplay to create a more engaging gamer experience. We also focused on a more surrealistic visual experience, which can be seen in the themes of the levels (ie Proto-Dream, One Night at the Fish Bowl, Men in Plaque, and Fly Me to the Moon). We learned to value communication and collaboration as a team. Without these two things, the team could not have been successful. Through sharing the experience of overcoming adversity, the team felt more confident as developers for the future.
