Amanda Regan

Dr. Regan left the CPH to accept a position as a full-time Lecturer, then Assistant Profesor in the Department of History and Geography at Clemson University.

Amanda Regan joined the Center for Presidential History in Fall 2019. Her current book project, Shaping Up: Physical Fitness Initiatives for Women, 1880-1965, examines particular instances in the late nineteenth and twentieth-century when patriarchal forces sought to encourage the fitness of female bodies. Shaping Up argues that the discourse of fitness became a powerful instrument in managing women’s bodies around a series of conflicting social, economic, and political demands. Amanda also specializes in digital history and her work often relies upon computational methodologies as a research tool for examining large corpuses of primary sources and gleaning new insights. 

Amanda received her PhD from George Mason University in 2019. From 2013 to 2015 Amanda was a Digital History Fellow at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM). Continuing at RRCHNM from 2015-2018 she served as the Software Development Manger for the PressForward Project and as the Managing Editor of Digital Humanities Now.

In addition to working on grant funded digital humanities projects at RRCHNM, Amanda also has experience leading digital humanities workshops. She has led workshops on text mining at places such as the Library of Congress and the University of California, Riverside. She also has experience leading digital workshops for K-12 teachers. At George Mason she frequently taught the History Department's undergraduate digital history course.
