Major
The Spanish major has three tracks, for non-native, heritage and native speakers of Spanish. These categories refer to a student’s linguistic ability and are determined by the Spanish area adviser. As such, tracks and appropriate courses are selected in consultation with the Spanish area adviser. Study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country is strongly recommended. Spanish Courses
Track for Native Speakers. Native speakers will start coursework at the 4000 level. In consultation with the Spanish area chair, they should begin withSPAN 4301orSPAN 4302, with one exception: native speakers who have not had formal academic training in written Spanish may begin coursework withSPAN 3359. Track for Heritage Speakers:Heritage speakers must takeSPAN 2323andSPAN 3359instead ofSPAN 2302andSPAN 3358. From the second category above, they may select fromSPAN 3373,SPAN 3374, orSPAN 3375only. Track for Non-Native Speakers:The requirements below reflect the non-native track. SMU Degree RequirementsAn SMU undergraduate degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and must include completion of theUniversity’s Common Curriculum, one major and a combination of electives and/or other majors or minors. Completion of certain majors requires more than 120 hours to finish the degree. The credit hours within this curriculum are distributed as follows: |
