The SMU Department of World Languages and Literatures prepares students for a complex and interconnected world.

Students pursuing degrees from our department have the opportunity to specialize in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. We offer courses ranging from the study of African and French history through film to the study of international business, to the study of Latin American politics. We also offer many opportunities to study abroad in China, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Morocco, and Spain, and the Czech Republic.

  • Faculty Experience

    World Languages and Literatures Faculty are fortunate to design and implement a range of innovative, exciting courses both in traditional face-to-face classrooms as well as in blended and fully online formats.

  • International Film Studies minor

    The International Film Studies minor develops skills in the analysis of media and visual data combined with a high degree of global knowledge and awareness.

  • WLL Tech Center

    The center provides a comfortable space for students and classes to screen films from all regions of the world, take placement and proficiency exams, hold class meetings, lectures, and brown bag sessions, and read and study. Over 2000 student visits to the Teaching and Technology Center are recorded each semester.
