Events
SMU students have ample opportunities to understand Russian culture and practice Russian language in a wide range of settings. These include conversation meetings, international festivals, documentary film screenings, meetings with film directors/producers, university conferences, and a Russian Studies guest lecture series.
Guest Lectures
These lectures and discussions are organized with the support of the Russian Club, International Studies, the History department, and Student Senate. The program has a long tradition of inviting leading American, Russian, and European scholars and experts in different fields of Russian Studies to visit the SMU campus throughout the year.
Eurasian Cultural Festival
This cultural festival has been a beloved event since 1997. It offers members of the SMU and Dallas communities a unique opportunity to learn more about Eurasian cultures, music, history and international relations. The festival, consisting of lectures, discussions, art exhibits, and concerts, is a collaboration between the Russian Area of the Department of World Languages and Literatures and the Meadows School of the Arts.
Documentary Film Showcase
The Russian Documentary Film Festival has been organized since 2003. SMU students not only have an opportunity to watch the most recent films but also to participate in discussions with film directors and producers. This program is a collaboration with other Russian departments of Texas universities and the Russian Cultural Center in Houston.
The Russian Area also participates in the annual World Languages and Literatures International Film Festival. Film screenings are sponsored by Russian Club and accompanied by presentations and discussions.
