Retired faculty member Dr. Samuel A. Zimmerman passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Professor Zimmerman served SMU for 36 years beginning in 1964 for the Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. His roles included Associate and Assistant Professor, Director of the SMU-in-Spain program, founder and Director of SMU’s summer program in Xalapa, Mexico, Director of the Latin American Studies program, and Vice Chair of the Spanish Area within the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. During his career, Professor Zimmerman was a three-time Outstanding Professor Award recipient as well as a recipient of the prestigious “M” Award. In 2000, he retired from SMU as Professor Emeritus of Foreign Languages.
