Engage Dallas Alternative Break Participant Reflection

Residential Commons Alternative Breaks

Each March, over spring break, Engage Dallas hosts an alternative break trip incorporating many of the community-identified needs we focus on throughout the year. An alternative break trip is a group of 10 to 12 individuals, including a faculty/staff advisor and 2 site leaders, spending 2 to 7 days serving together around the Engage Dallas community needs locally or in a different geographic location. Some years, trips are in Dallas which allows us to deepen our connection and understanding of the local South and West Dallas community. When we travel outside of the Dallas community, students who participate in the alternative break trip will be able to engage in compare-and-contrast reflections on how the social issue varies by geographic location. Sign ups open at the end of each fall semester.

#1DayforDallas Residential Commons Fall Day of Service

The Residential Commons fall service day, known as #1Day4Dallas, serves as an annual tradition where every Residential Commons participates in service around their community-identified need on the same day. Each Residential Commons will have a goal of meeting the needed number of students to serve in the same geographic location at various non-profit organizations and community agencies (the same organizations the Residential Commons work with for monthly programs). This annual event is a student-led initiative supported by the Engage Dallas Student Directors and SMU Service House (SMUSH) liaisons.
