Steps to Apply to the APSM Major

You must successfully complete a subset of two courses from one of three areas of interest before you apply to the major:

Applied Physiology & Health Management (APHM) specialization

  • APSM 2441 Human Anatomy & Physiology I with lab
  • Choice of one additional course in APHM
    • APSM 3343 Health Promotion Management (highly recommended)
    • APSM 2442 Anatomy & Physiology II with lab
    • APSM 3332 Legal and Ethical Aspects in APSM
    • APSM 3340 Applied Management Skills

Sport Management (SM) concentration

  • APSM 2310 Contemporary Issues
  • Choice of one additional course in SM
    • APSM 3311 Applied Exercise Physiology
    • APSM 3322 Functional Biomechanics
    • APSM 3332 Legal and Ethical Aspects in APSM
    • APSM 3340 Applied Management Skills
    • APSM 3372 Advanced PR in Sport

Sport Performance Leadership (SPL) concentration

  • APSM 2340 Coaching and Leadership for Performance
  • Choice of any one additional course in SPL (taught by SPL full-time faculty)
    • APSM 3315 Communication in Sport
    • APSM 3322 Functional Biomechanics

You must have earned 30 credit hours by the end of the semester in which you’ve applied.

Minimum SMU cumulative GPA of 2.00 (which is the university requirement to declare or change a major).
Selection is based on: 1) your SMU cumulative GPA, 2) successful completion of the APSM subset, and 3) your level of professional behavior and attitude within the classroom.

You should know that we are only interested in the committed student who consistently demonstrates high levels of integrity, responsibility, enthusiasm, effort, and maintains a passion and professional behavior for the direction of study you have chosen while completing the two required courses. If this describes you, then we want you!

For Summer 2021 Applicants: You must submit your APSM application, essay, DPR, UG Summary, signed honor code form, and signed digital release form to Susan Sifford via email, ssifford@smu.edu, by Monday, July 26, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.

After final grades have been posted in My.SMU showing completion of above requirements, you will be notified by the APSM office of acceptance or non-acceptance via email.

Students accepted into the APSM major are required to attend a reception held the following semester introducing all newly accepted majors. Please make note that attendance to this reception is required!
