SMU celebrates five years of Mustang Scholars
SMU-DISD program celebrates 5th anniversary of helping students.
DALLAS (SMU) – Fall 2014 marks the fifth anniversary of the SMU Mustang Scholars Program that provides four-year merit based scholarships to qualifying DISD graduates.
This year’s Mustangs Scholars are Almaz Abraham, Adrien Ibarra, Katherine Linares and Alexis Madrigal—all graduates of the Science and Engineering Magnet at Townview; Daisy Jamaica of Skyline High School; Liliana Mata of Booker T. Washington High School; Adrieanna Reyes and Lucia Quezada of Warren T. White High School and Raul Reyes of L.G. Pinkston High School.
The Mustang Scholars Program is part of SMU’s community pledge to the city of Dallas to provide academic opportunities to Dallas’ young, emerging leaders. The program also represents SMU’s desire to encourage educational achievement and recognize academic excellence within the greater community.
“We are extremely excited to celebrate five years of Mustang Scholars and enjoy welcoming a new group of academically gifted DISD graduates,” said SMU’s Rod Jackson, senior associate director of undergraduate admission and director of diversity initiatives.
To be considered for the Mustang Scholar Program, students must submit a formal SMU application, write a 500-word essay, have graduated from a DISD high school, be a resident of Texas and be Pell Grant eligible. Finalists must also participate in a daylong panel interview process. Application fee waivers are available. Applications must be received by January 15 and FAFSA and CSS profiles must be submitted by February 15.
