SMU alumna and philanthropist Ann Thompson Maguire dies
Ann Thompson Maguire, civic leader, philanthropist and SMU graduate, died Jan. 3, 2013. She was the wife of Cary M. Maguire, former member of the SMU Board of Trustees.
DALLAS (SMU) – Ann Thompson Maguire, civic leader, philanthropist and SMU graduate, died Jan. 3, 2013. She was the wife of Cary M. Maguire, former member of the SMU Board of Trustees.
Mrs. Maguire graduated from SMU in 1952 with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish. Active in Dallas civic affairs, she was a member of committees supporting the Crystal Charity Ball, the Dallas-Fort Worth World Affairs Council and the Sweetheart Ball, benefiting the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Loyal supporters of Mrs. Maguire’s alma mater, Mr. and Mrs. Maguire founded the Maguire Energy Institute and the Maguire Chair in Oil and Gas Management at Cox School of Business. In addition, they founded the Maguire Chair in Ethics and the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility and provided broad and generous support for various scholarships, capital projects and faculty research and awards.
“Ann Maguire was a devoted alumna who, with her husband, Cary, made contributions that changed the shape of SMU,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. “They gave us, among other things, an innovative Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility and Energy Institute. Mrs. Maguire was active in all University activities, remaining a close and cherished member of the SMU family. We will miss her graciousness and generous spirit and offer our heartfelt condolences to the family.”
Mr. and Mrs. Maguire received SMU’s Mustang Award in 1995, recognizing their support and service to the University. Mr. Maguire was honored as Trustee Emeritus in 2002.
Mr. Maguire serves on SMU’s Cox School of Business Executive Board, the Maguire Energy Institute Advisory Board, the Maguire Ethics Center Advisory Board, the John Goodwin Tower Center Board of Directors and the Second Century Celebration Organizing Committee.
At the family’s request, memorial contributions may be given to the Ann Maguire Memorial Fund in the Maguire Center for Ethics.
