Award-winning Altius Quartet to present concert Sept. 21 at SMU

Composed of four former graduate students in the Meadows School’s Division of Music, the Altius Quartet includes violinist Sercan Danis (B.M. Violin Performance ’11 and Performer’s Diploma ’13); violinist Andrew Giordano (M.M. ’13); violist Andrew Krimm (Performer’s Diploma ’13); and cellist Zachary Reaves (B.M. Cello Performance ’11 and Performer’s Diploma ’13).
The Altius Quartet was formed in 2011 for the purpose of performing in Bridge the Gap chamber music events; Bridge the Gap, founded by Altius member Reaves, is an unorthodox series of chamber music performances designed to attract those who otherwise would avoid classical music. Bridge the Gap performances are often held in non-traditional places such as city parks. In these relaxed settings, ensembles play Beethoven as well as Jimi Hendrix.
Altius has performed at venues in Texas and Oklahoma and played for respected string quartets and classical music teachers, including the Miró Quartet, the Shanghai Quartet, Tim Ying, Matt Albert, James Dunham, Kenneth Goldsmith, Emanuel Borok, Andrés Díaz and Roberto Diaz.
In April, the Altius Quartet took first place in the strings and piano division at the 2013 Plowman International Chamber Music Competition in Columbia, Mo. Over the summer the members served as Artists-in-Residence at Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony in Eureka Springs, Ark., where they taught master classes and performed a recital. Upcoming engagements include a performance at Webster University in St. Louis and a concert tour through Colorado as the resident string quartet of the Western Slope Concert Series, based in Grand Junction, Colo.
At SMU, the quartet will give two performances a year. The spring performance will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, in Caruth Auditorium.
