SMU Men's Basketball Announces 2011-12 Schedule
SMU Men's Basketball announces its schedule with the season beginning in Moody Coliseum in mid-November.
DALLAS (SMU) — The SMU Men's Basketball team announced its 2011-12 schedule this week.
The Ponies play 16 games in Dallas, including 14 dates at Moody Coliseum, The Showcase vs. Oklahoma State at the American Airlines Center on Dec. 28, and the Dallas Classic at Ellis Davis Fieldhouse on Dec. 15.
The Mustangs open the season at home Nov. 11 and have a non-conference schedule that includes the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off, a road contest at Mississippi on Jan. 3, and a home game against TCU on Feb. 8. In Conference USA, SMU hosts defending champion UAB in addition to regional rivals UTEP, Rice, Houston and Tulsa.
Meanwhile, SMU Women's Basketball announced its 2011-12 schedule in September. It includes 15 home games in Moody Coliseum, including the annual "Hoops for the Cure" tournament Nov. 25-26. The schedule features four games against 2011 NCAA Tournament participants.
The SMU men's basketball team enters 2011-12 following its most successful season in more than a decade. The Mustangs recorded their first 20-win season and first postseason bid since 1999-2000; finishing 20-15 and advancing to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) semifinal.
SMU men's basketball had its most wins in Conference USA (8) while leading the league in field goal percentage (48.2, 7th NCAA), 3-point percentage (39.4, 13th NCAA) and free throw percentage (74.2, 38th NCAA). The Mustangs also tied the SMU record with 15 home wins at Moody Coliseum.
The Conference USA schedule includes two matchups against UTEP (NIT), Houston, Tulsa, Tulane and Rice. The one-game matchups include home games against UAB (NCAA), Marshall (CIT) and UCF (CBI) as well as road contests against Memphis (NCAA), East Carolina (CIT) and Southern Miss. The Conference USA Championship is in Memphis from March 7-10.
The SMU men's basketball team will host its sixth-annual Tip-Off Dinner at the Park Cities Hilton Ballroom on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. TNT analyst and two-time NBA champion Kenny Smith will serve as the keynote speaker.
Coach Doherty will also preview the 2011-12 season on the Hilltop.
