Peruna logoDALLAS (SMU) — SMU finished 10th nationally in the Excellence in Management Cup, presented by Texas A&M's Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA), the group announced Monday. SMU was the top-ranked school in Texas and trailed only Tulsa within Conference USA.

The purpose of the Excellence in Management Cup is to determine which athletic departments win the most conference and national championships while at the same time having the lowest expenses. The scores are calculated via a formula that accounts for total athletic department spending, number of sports played and the number of conference and national championships won by each university.

During the 2008-09 academic year, SMU won five conference championships, claiming titles in cross country, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and women's basketball.

Overall, Utah State ranked first. Regionally, Tulsa was eighth, Rice was 12th, Texas A&M was 15th and TCU rated 25th.
