Pollock Gallery Exhibit and Auction: The Arts of Oppression

The Pollock Gallery and Dallas-based nonprofit Miles of Freedom present The Arts of Oppression, an exhibit and auction of more than 180 works by people currently or formerly incarcerated. The show includes pieces from the collection of San Angelo’s Darkwood Gallery, devoted to showcasing creative works by current and former inmates, as well as historical references to the issues of mass incarceration, human rights and the criminal justice system. Works will be available for sale through an online auction that opens September 11 and closes October 30. The auction will go live on September 11 at this link: https://www.32auctions.com/theartsofoppression. Proceeds will benefit the featured artists and Miles of Freedom, whose mission is to equip, empower and employ individuals returning home from prison and provide support for their families. Miles of Freedom is presenting the show as part of its yearlong Office Space Residency at the Pollock Gallery, and will collaborate on programming throughout the year connecting art and human rights. The Museo del Traje (Spanish National Museum for Fashion) in Madrid is Spain’s premier museum of historic dress and fashion. While the institution was only founded in 2004, its core collection has a much longer history, dating back to the influential 1925 exhibition, Traje Regional e Histórico (Regional and Historic Dress). Since that time, and over the course of the collection’s history, it has changed names many times but has also developed considerably in breadth and diversity. This lecture will tell the story of the Museo del Traje and its holdings. This program is sponsored by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain. Curatorial Minds Lab: Virtual Lecture with Guest Curator Taylor Renee Aldridge

Taylor Renee Aldridge is the visual arts curator and program manager at the California African American Museum (CAAM). Prior, she worked as a writer and independent curator in Detroit, Michigan. She has organized exhibitions with the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Artist Market, Cranbrook Art Museum, and The Luminary (St. Louis). In 2015, along with art critic Jessica Lynne, she co-founded ARTS.BLACK, a journal of art criticism for Black perspectives. Her writing has appeared in Artforum, The Art Newspaper, Art21, ARTNews, Frieze, Harper’s Bazaar, Canadian Art, Detroit Metro Times, and SFMoMA’s Open Space. The lecture is presented as part of the Curatorial Minds Lab, a new initiative of the Hamon Arts Library’s Hawn Gallery and the Pollock Gallery at SMU that gives five Fellows – made up of alumni and current students – an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the historical development of curatorial practices and study contemporary art display theory and practice. The concert opens with the overture to Der Freischütz, a defining 1821 German Romantic opera by Carl Maria von Weber about a huntsman who makes a pact with the devil so that his bullets will magically hit their mark. The overture dramatically depicts the two central elements of the opera – in Weber’s words, “the life of the hunter and the rule of demonic powers.” It will be followed by Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose ballet, an elegant work depicting the magical world of Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb and other popular fairy tales. The concert concludes with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2; completed in 1846 while the composer was battling physical and mental illness, the work nonetheless reflects affirmation and strength in the face of obstacles. Schumann called it “music of light and shade, sunshine and shadow.” The concert will be conducted by guest artist Andrew Grams, music director of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. He was named 2015 Conductor of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras and has guest-conducted orchestras worldwide, from Barcelona to Dallas to Zagreb.
