An animated commercial created for Diptyque candles by Anna Rose Corell and Gaëlle Gachelin, which won a Silver award in the local Dallas ADDY competition in February (see story below), won two awards at the District 10 competition in April: a Gold award in the “animation or special effects” category and a Judge’s Choice award. The Diptyque entry will now move up to the national competition in June.
The district competition is the second of the three tiers of the national ADDY Awards. At the third tier, the national level, student entries are eligible for a finalist certificate, a national Student American Advertising Award for first-place winners, and a $1,000 cash prize for the national Best of Show winner.
The district competition includes entries from professional agencies and colleges throughout Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma that won gold and silver awards in their respective local competitions. Judging for the district contest was held virtually due to the coronavirus. Judges were Aldo Gonzalez, associate creative director of The Community in Miami; Danielle Gutherie, co-founder of The Sister Collective in San Francisco; and Rodolfo Fernandes, associate creative director at FCB Chicago.

“I was incredibly proud of how well our students represented SMU at the Dallas ADDYs,” said Temerlin lecturer Mark Allen. “In spite of fierce competition, we won six Silvers, two Golds and the overall Student Best of Show—that’s more ADDYs than any other single school took home at this show. Also, since all of our winners were Silver and above, all nine of them qualify to advance to the district AAF competition in mid April, which will showcase top student work from throughout Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. We have a very strong group of students right now and I fully expect that this is not the last time people will hear about them bringing trophies back to the Hilltop!”
“It was so rewarding to have our P3 campaign win both Gold and Best of Show because it verified that the countless hours we poured into it were worthwhile, and it illustrated that at the end of the day, not much beats hard work,” said Anna Rose Corell and Gaëlle Gachelin in a joint statement. “We can’t begin to put into words how grateful we are for our professors Mark Allen and Willie Baronet, who helped bring this campaign, and countless other projects, to life. Their guidance and willingness to work with us, push us, and encourage us is beyond words. There is truly no place like Temerlin—the professors are absolutely phenomenal and have tremendously influenced both of our undergraduate experiences and lives.”
Hundreds of entries were submitted in the local competition this year from area advertising agencies and universities. Judges were Astrid Adjujar, art director at Droga5 in New York City; Jorge Pomareda, creative director at Highdive in Chicago; Marie Richer, an independent creative director in New York; and Justin Adu, global social media marketing strategist at Google.
The local American Advertising Awards are the first level of a three-tier national competition. Local winners may advance to the district level, and district winners compete in the national American Advertising Awards in Palm Springs, California in June.
The American Advertising Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing and rewarding creative excellence in the art of advertising. Every year almost 35,000 entries are submitted in local American Advertising Awards competitions. The Student American Advertising Awards, sponsored by the American Advertising Federation and National Ad 2, are a sub-category designed especially for college students. Applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time in an accredited U.S. educational institution.
Established in 2001 in the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU, the Temerlin Advertising Institute for Education and Research is the country’s first endowed institute for the study of advertising. The Institute is named in honor of Liener Temerlin, who was a respected humanitarian and leader in the advertising industry. Offering both B.A. and M.A. degrees, TAI trains students to search for unique solutions in advertising, preparing them for work in advertising agencies, media firms, corporate marketing departments and design studios. In addition to opportunities for a 15-week executive internship, M.A. candidates also study advertising outside the U.S. to further develop global perspective. TAI has established an award-winning track record. Students have earned numerous honors, including two national and four district championships in the AAF National Student Advertising Competition and dozens of creative awards in prestigious regional, national and international competitions including The One Show, CMYK Magazine and The Art Directors Club of New York. In addition, the Temerlin Institute was named one of 10 leaders in advertising education among colleges and universities in the U.S. by Stuart Elliott, former advertising critic for The New York Times.
