Pianist Alessio Bax, Johnson-Prothro Artist-in-Residence, Launches National Tour with Violinist Joshua Bell

Pianist Alessio Bax, a Johnson-Prothro Artist in Residence at SMU Meadows, will launch a national tour October 28 with superstar violinist Joshua Bell. Bax, winner of both the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions, has been called “among the most remarkable young pianists now before the public” (Gramophone). Bax and Bell will perform together in Massachusetts, Wisconsin and New York, including a concert on November 2 at Alice Tully Hall as part of Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series.

Hailed by International Piano as “a pianist of refreshing depth,” Bax maintains an extensive worldwide performance schedule. He has appeared as soloist with more than 100 orchestras, including the London and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, Dallas and Houston symphonies, NHK Symphony in Japan, St. Petersburg Philharmonic with Yuri Temirkanov and the City of Birmingham Symphony with Sir Simon Rattle. He is also an acclaimed recording artist with notable CDs on both the Signum Classics and Warner Classics labels. In 2013, he received the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award and Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, which recognizes young artists of exceptional accomplishment. Bax earned an Artist Certificate at Meadows in 1996 as a student of Joaquín Achúcarro, followed by a master’s in piano performance. He and his wife, international pianist Lucille Chung, were named Johnson-Prothro Artists-in-Residence at Meadows in 2015. At SMU, Bax teaches private lessons, conducts master classes and curates performing projects that include faculty and students.
