Zhulong Gallery Opens with Meadows New Media Art

The new Zhulong Gallery in the Dallas Design District is championing new media and is launching its inaugural exhibition with works from Meadows School of the Arts artists.

Gallery director Aja Martin (M.A. Art History, ’11) curated Satellite, featuring the work of 11 artists, including Ira Greenberg, director of the SMU Center of Creative Computation, and alumna Anh-Thuy Nguyen (M.F.A. Studio Art, ’12).

Greenberg, whose primary medium is computer code, is collaborating with Meadows School of the Arts Division of Music faculty member Martin Sweidel on ProtoJuncusEffusus Garden, a real-time code-generated piece built with Greenberg's own custom Protobyte software library.

Nguyen, a performance and video artist, created a piece for the show that explores people’s significant cultural relationships with food, presenting distinct but universal ideas.

“I've been interested in New Media art and the relationship between art and technology since completing my M.A. thesis, Virtual Progression: the High Line as Verdant Infoscape, at Meadows,” says Martin. “The thesis allowed me to explore ideas regarding the overlap of real and virtual worlds and also cast the high line redesign as an attempt to liberate the post-modern subject.”

According to Martin, the new gallery will feature aural, responsive, digital and filmic pieces, as well as sculptural and two-dimensional pieces that illustrate or question the confluence of the virtual and the real.‎
