Meadows Grad Working with NBC at the Sochi Olympics
Second time to work at the Games for Art History and Dance double major Morgan Beckwith (’13)
NBC is relying on recent Meadows grad Morgan Beckwith to help arrange athlete interviews during the 22nd Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. This is her second turn working with the network for the Olympic games.
“I worked in the booking department for the London games in 2012, and NBC asked me to join the team again for these winter Olympics,” says Beckwith.
The booking department is responsible for arranging athlete interviews for all of the NBC entities in Russia, explains Beckwith. “We arrange everything from logistics planning of transportation and security of the athletes and their guests to more complex managing of the NBC embargo period just after the athletes win medals,” she says. “My role is to support the three primary bookers on the NBC team with this entire process.”
Pamela Patton, chair of the Art History Department, says she is not surprised that an art history major can land such a position. “We prepare our students by giving them a versatile skill set, including verbal fluency and cultural savvy, that allows them to leap at – and succeed in – opportunities like this,” says Patton. Of Beckwith, Patton adds, “She was one of our top students, earning the department’s Outstanding Senior Award at our Honors Convocation last year.”
UPDATE 2/7: Patty Harrington Delaney, chair of the Division of Dance, says Beckwith contributed greatly to the artistic and intellectual life of the Division. "She brought her elegant strength as a performer to many roles, such as her featured part in Prayer by renowned choreographer Jessica Lang. Her academic work was exemplary and her writing on dance concerts for media outlets was some of the best critical writing by a student I've ever encountered."
Though she can’t give details about the network’s day to day activities until the games are over, she clearly loves her job. “NBC has a strict policy regarding sharing information about the games during the official accreditation period,” she explains. “But I can say this, it’s been an incredible experience working for the talented individuals at NBC and getting to meet these wonderful athletes at the prime of their career in order to help share their story back home.”
