Instrument Repair for the Band Director
This workshop will focus on emergency and minor repairs of woodwind and brass instruments. Woodwind repair instruction includes replacing pads, corks, and springs; leveling and adjusting flutes, clarinets, and saxophones; and how to spot minor defects that can cause major playing problems. Brass repair instruction includes replacing felts, corks, and waterkey springs; freeing stuck slides and mouthpieces; disassembling and cleaning instruments; and spotting problems that you can fix yourself!
- Dates: June 7 – 8
- Times: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Noncredit Cost: $300
- Graduate Credit Cost: Additional $500 for one hour of graduate credit (paid separately to SMU after following instructions in the workshop registration confirmation email)

- Required Materials: A required toolkit will be available for purchase at the workshop for an additional $125. Payments for the toolkit may be made via cash or check made payable to Ann MacMillan.
Instrument Repair Faculty
Ann MacMillan holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Emporia State University and a Master of Music Education from the University of North Texas. In 1982 MacMillan began repairing musical instruments at Foster Music Company in Garden City, Kansas. During her master’s degree program at UNT she began working at Brook Mays Music Company, working there for eight years before joining the UNT College of Music as a repair technician and instructor in 1997. MacMillan has taught clinics for band directors in the Dallas area, Aiken South Carolina, Interlochen summer programs, SMU, and presented clinics at KMEA and TMEA.
