SMU Lyle School of Engineering Welcomes Adel Alaeddini, Ph.D. as O'Donnell Foundation Professor of Mechanical Engineering

SMU Lyle School of Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Adel Alaeddini has joined our faculty as O'Donnell Foundation Professor of Mechanical Engineering, effective August 1, 2024. Dr. Alaeddini also serves as the Executive Director of Research Innovation at the Center for Digital and Human-Augmented Manufacturing (CDHAM) at SMU Lyle. Dr. Alaeddini's research is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning with Mechanical Engineering, grounded in the principles of physics and human expertise. His innovative work spans a broad range of applications, including Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Energy, reflecting his commitment to addressing complex challenges across multiple industries. Throughout his career, Dr. Alaeddini has secured nearly $8 million in research funding, supported by prestigious agencies such as the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), among others. His scholarly contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, including IISE Transactions, Production and Operations Management (POMS), and Energy. Dr. Alaeddini's influence extends beyond research. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for several esteemed journals, including the Journal of Applied Statistics, Healthcare Management Science, and IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering. Additionally, he holds the position of Technical Vice President of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), highlighting his leadership within the engineering community. As the Executive Director of Research Innovation at CDHAM, Dr. Alaeddini will play a pivotal role in advancing the center's mission to lead in the field of digital and human-augmented manufacturing. His expertise and vision are set to drive innovation and foster interdisciplinary collaborations that will benefit both the academic community and industry partners.
