SMU Names Dinesh Rajan as Senior Associate Dean, Joe Camp as Interim Chair of ECE
DALLAS (SMU) – Professor Dinesh Rajan has been appointed Senior Associate Dean of the Lyle School. Dr. Rajan previously served as Department Chair and Cecil and Ida Green Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Professor Joe Camp will serve as Interim Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. Dr. Camp joined the SMU faculty in 2009.
Rajan’s broad interests are in the sensing, extraction, transmission, and dissemination of information. He has published numerous technical articles in leading journals and conferences, co-edited 2 books and coauthored 1 book, and has been awarded 3 patents. Rajan is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2006 for his work on applying information theory to the design of mobile wireless networks.
Camp’s research interests are wireless systems, drone communications, and blockchain network effects, specifically building real systems at-scale and analyzing the performance within representative environments. Since 2016, Camp has chaired the ECE Undergraduate Curriculum Committee that worked together to produce a now adopted ECE curriculum that unifies the student experience before specialization. He was also a member of the General Education Task Force from 2016-2018 that led to the Common Curriculum. Camp received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2012), the Golden Mustang Teaching Award (2014), and the Gerald J. Ford Research Fellowship (2021).
Rajan joined SMU in 2002 as an Assistant Professor and has been serving as chair of the ECE department since 2012. In this role he has overseen the transition of the department from the Electrical Engineering department to its merger with Computer Engineering to become the ECE department. Rajan received his B.Tech degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras in Electrical Engineering. He was also awarded the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rice University, Houston, Texas both in the areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Camp received his Ph.D in ECE from Rice University. He received an M.S. at Rice and B.S. with honors from the UT-Austin, both in ECE.
