Anthony J. Colangelo

Anthony Colangelo’s scholarly and teaching interests are in the fields of conflict of laws, civil procedure, U.S. foreign relations law, and private and public international law and theory.
Professor Colangelo’s articles have appeared in top general and specialty journals and have been cited and quoted at the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, and U.S. District Court levels, as well as in U.S. Military Commissions, regarding, among other things, the scope of U.S. law relating to piracy, terrorism, child-sex tourism, military contractors, and human rights abuses. He has also partnered with the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability with respect to the legality of use of nuclear weapons under international law.
Prior to coming to SMU, Professor Colangelo held an Associate-in-Law research and teaching fellowship at Columbia Law School. Before Columbia, he worked as a litigation associate at the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton LLP in the New York and Rome offices.
Professor Colangelo clerked for the Honorable Ralph K. Winter, United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Professor Colangelo received his B.A., summa cum laude, from Middlebury College and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Northwestern University, where he was Notes Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review. He holds an LL.M. and J.S.D. from Columbia Law School. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif.
