Emma Armstrong is a doctoral student of history at Southern Methodist University. Her research interests include American diplomatic history during the Cold War, environmental history, 20th-century scientific and technological developments, and military bases. Encompassing all these themes, Emma’s forthcoming dissertation examines the Arctic as a distinct theater of the Cold War. In May 2024, Emma earned a terminal M.A. degree and passed her oral comprehensive exam with distinction. Emma was a 2023-2024 Wilson Center Cold War Archives Research Fellow and presented her preliminary dissertation research in Budapest, Hungary. Prior to her graduate studies at SMU, Emma earned her B.A. in History from Angelo State University in 2020 with a minor in English and high honors in Russian language. Before attending ASU, she studied ballet and Russian language at the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. In her spare time, Emma enjoys reading, cross-stitching, cooking, and spending time with family, friends, and her four pets.
