Susan Norman
Lecturer
Susan Ayotte Norman has been teaching first-year writing at SMU since 2015. She teaches in the Hilltop Scholars Program in addition to regular sections of Academic Writing. She holds a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Dallas where her primary fields of study were Narrative Theory and American Literature. Her dissertation was focused on the role of narrative perspective in speculative fiction. Dr. Norman’s teaching pedagogy is centered on the belief that writing is a mode of critical thinking, and she enjoys sharing her passion for writing with her SMU students.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Norman is a fiction and essay writer. She has received fellowships and scholarships from the Sewanee Writer’s Conference, the Jentel Foundation, and the Juniper Writer’s Conference. Her fiction has been published in a number of journals and was recently added to Short Edition’s short story “vending machines,” which are available in Europe, Asia, and other places around the world.
