Undergraduate Research

Jake Berard

Prior to my graduation in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, I conducted Senior Distinction research under the supervision of Professor Tim Salmon entitled “Behavioral Rockonomics: An Investigation into Concert Ticket Price-Setting Behavior on the Primary Market.” This multi-faceted study backed by original data collection provides evidence that decision-makers within the concert industry systematically employ suboptimal ticket pricing strategies. Following the completion of the project, I was invited to present my research to the Dallas Association for Business Economics. I am currently a University Fellow at Ohio State University pursuing a Doctorate in Economics.

I completed a senior distinction project titled, “Evaluating the Socioeconomic Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Migrant Workers in Mumbai and Surrounding Areas” under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Osang. This research paper examines the impact of the lockdown on the migrant workers’ socioeconomic conditions - income and physical health – based on a sample of 206 workers from Mumbai and surrounding areas. We compare the workers’ socioeconomic conditions over three periods: pre-pandemic, during the lockdown, and the last quarter of 2020. We find a V-shaped pattern in the migrant workers’ income, physical health, and expenditure over the three periods. We further identify the differential effects of industry, gender, job tenure, and geographic movements during the lockdown on our socioeconomic indicators. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Thomas Osang for his mentorship and the Engaged Learning Fellowship for their support in seeing through this project.
