Animal Research
In the SMU policy 7.10 Animal Care and Use Policy, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) was designated with the management and evaluation of the University animal care and use program, procedures and facilities. IACUC is responsible in ensuring research laboratories compliance in all relevant laws, regulations, rules and guidelines governing the human care and use of animals.
Under the 2015 Assurance statement, all individuals working in or having access to the SMU animal research laboratories are required to participate the Occupational Health and Safety Program for (OHSP) for Laboratory and Animal Research.All animal researchers listed on all IACUC protocols, or subsequently added to the protocols must enrolled in OHSP before any animal work can begin.
OHSP Enrollment Requirements:
- Completing the Animal Health Questionnaire and medical evaluation at Concentra.
- Authorization form and photo ID is required for evaluation. Please contact SMU EHS for authorization form.
- Medical evaluation may include services such as immunizations, testing and/or personal protective equipment (PPE). All medical records are maintained by the health provider.
- Annual Update to general questions regarding any changes in your overall health status.
- Visit to the OHSP provider is not required during the annual update.
