Lead

Historically, lead and lead alloys have been used in a variety of materials, including paint, ceramics, caulk, and pipe solder. It is still commonly used in batteries, ammunition, some solders, and other metal products. Individuals are exposed to lead in a variety of ways, with most common being ingestion of lead dust from paint or inhalation due to exposure to lead dust or fumes.

All processes that involve the disturbance of potential lead-based paint must be routed through SMU Facilities. Other processes that could involve the generation of lead dust or fumes (soldering or welding for example) must be properly ventilated to avoid exposure. EHS can review processed where the potential for lead exposure exists.
