Panel on Energy-Efficient Supercomputing a Success at PEARC 2024

At the recent PEARC (Practice & Experience in Advanced Research Computing) conference in Providence, Rhode Island, O’Donnell Institute’s Rob Kalescky played a key role in the success of a high-impact panel discussion organized by the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC). The panel, focused on the latest innovations and strategies for energy-efficient supercomputing, captivated the attention of researchers, industry professionals, and academics eager to explore sustainable solutions in high-performance computing (HPC). Guided by expertise of the CASC Energy Efficiency in Computing Workgroup, the panel delivered valuable insights into reducing the environmental footprint of HPC systems. The conversation highlighted emerging trends and best practices, alongside forward-thinking strategies poised to shape the future of eco-friendly supercomputing. The event provided PEARC attendees with actionable knowledge and a clearer understanding of how to integrate energy efficiency into their own computing infrastructures. The success of this panel underscores the growing emphasis on sustainability within the tech industry and the crucial role that conferences like PEARC play in advancing these critical conversations.

Panel on Digital Twins at the Trillion Pixel Challenge Workshop

The 2024 joint NASA/DOE-ORNL Trillion Pixel Challenge workshop focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence foundation models and geospatial digital twins. O’Donnell Institute Director Neena Imam participated in the Hardware and Software Architectures panel for GeoAI twins. The panel discussed how the GeoAI community can leverage existing hardware and software platforms for GeoAI applications today, with respect to data, computing and workflows. The motivations behind the current generation of digital twins for geospatial, climate and environmental applications were also discussed.

SC24 Birds-of-a-Feather Session on Continuum Computing: The Quantum Edge

SC, the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, is an annual conference established in 1988 by the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE computer Society. SC has built a diverse community of participants including researchers, scientists, application developers, computing center staff and management, computing industry staff, agency program managers, journalists, and congressional staffers. This diversity is one of the conference’s strengths, making it a yearly “must attend” forum for stakeholders throughout the technical computing community.  For SC24 (November 17-22) the O’Donnell Institute is leading the BoF session on “Continuum Computing: The Quantum Edge”. More information on this event will become available soon.
