Maguire Center for Ethics honors military vets with “Red White & Blues” Veterans Day festival
SMU will host a celebration Wednesday, including a pinning ceremony, toy drive, music and free barbecue.

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU’s Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility is partnering with Residence Life & Student Housing to host a Veterans Day celebration from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Umphrey Lee Center’s Mack Ballroom.
The Red White & Blues festival will feature a veterans pinning ceremony, music, a raffle, a toy drive and free barbecue.
“SMU is fortunate to have a legacy of public service,” says Maguire Ethics Center Director Rita Kirk. “On Veterans Day, we recognize those who have served in our military. We are both humbled and honored to celebrate those who made great sacrifices and those who stood ready.”

The celebration will begin with a ceremonial pinning of SMU veterans with the MilVet lapel pin, which is available to all faculty, staff or student veterans. SMU veterans will be photographed on the steps of Dallas Hall at noon, and will have the opportunity to sign an SMU Centennial flag. The event also includes a free raffle, a Toys for Tots drive and the distribution of yellow lapel ribbons for attendees who wish to show their support for American veterans.

Dallas Blues Band “Miss Marcy and her Texas Sugar Daddys” will provide music.
Student led by Cockrell-McIntosh Commons and Armstrong Commons will honor veterans by tying yellow ribbons around the trees lining Bishop Blvd.
In a prelude to Veteran’s Day, the Meadows School of the Arts will present a musical tribute to veterans, “Sweet Freedom’s Song,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the Owen Fine Arts Center’s Taubman Atrium.
