Credit & Placement Exams

SMU offers placement exams for calculus, chemistry, and four world languages (Spanish, French, German, and Russian). Placement exams are accessible through the Pre-Advising Canvas Course.  We encourage all incoming students who need to take calculus and/or chemistry to take advantage of these placement exams as they are a helpful guide in determining what level is most appropriate. Prior to enrolling in a language course, you must either take a placement exam or, if your language of choice doesn't offer an exam, obtain permission from the department of World Languages & Literatures. 

Additionally, the Mathematics Department offers an optional credit exam for students with a strong background in calculus. This exam is offered in-person during move-in week. If you're interested in taking this exam, please contact the Mathematics Department.
