Perkins Dean Craig C. Hill to Lead Feb. 22 Houston Lay School of Theology Program

DALLAS (SMU) – Craig C. Hill, dean of Perkins School of Theology, will lead a day-long course, “Servant of All: Status, Ambition, and the Way of Jesus” at the Houston Lay School of Theology from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 22, 2020 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston.  The church is at 5501 Main Street in Houston. Online registration is now open. 

Dean Hill’s course will examine the tension between the biblical view of servant leadership and the status that Christians today often desire and pursue. Why do Christians care so much about how others view them? What resources does the New Testament provide to confront this dilemma and proceed in a direction that conforms more to Jesus’ way of life? These and other related questions will be tackled in this day-long course.

Hill, the 11th dean of Perkins School of Theology, is a New Testament scholar and an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. He previously served on the faculty of Duke Divinity School where he was executive director of the Doctor of Ministry and Master of Christian Practice programs.  He served for a decade in various pastoral appointments, including the chaplaincy of Christ Church, John Wesley’s undergraduate Oxford college. 

The Houston Lay School of Theology meets each February and August, offering an opportunity for laity and others to explore issues of spirituality, theology and church leadership with faculty from Perkins. The program is sponsored by the Office of External Programs at Perkins.

Advanced registration for the full-day course, including lunch, is $70 per person and $55 per person for groups of five or more. Advanced registration for the half-day courses (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.) is $40 and it concludes before lunch. All those registering by February 14 will receive a free copy of Dean Hill's book Servant of All: Status, Ambition, and the Way of Jesus.

On-site registration is $80 per person (full-day course; lunch is not guaranteed) and $45 (half-day course).  A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. For more information, contact Denise Espinosa Lloyd at (281) 437-6018 no less than two weeks prior to the event.
