Annual UN Day Awards Ceremony
The Dallas Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA, a national grassroots organization devoted to strengthening the U.S.- UN relationship through public education and advocacy, announced its 2018 Honorees – an extraordinary group of North Texans, for their bold, transformative work shifting the world onto a more sustainable and resilient path.
DALLAS (SMU) – The Dallas Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA, a national grassroots organization devoted to strengthening the U.S.- UN relationship through public education and advocacy, announced its 2018 Honorees – an extraordinary group of North Texans, for their bold, transformative work shifting the world onto a more sustainable and resilient path.
This year’s recipients, through their organizations and body of work, have helped advance gender equality, immigration reform, humanitarianism, democracy, and more. UNA-USA, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, will honor the recipients at the annual UN Day Reception & Awards on Tuesday, October 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at SMU Hughes-Trigg Student Center. The event is co-sponsored by Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University.

In addition, UNA-USA Dallas will present its first-ever "Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Hero Award" to Linda Abramson Evans (board member and 30-year UNA Dallas member), to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Committee on Refugees that she founded and maintains. Linda’s leadership and personal volunteerism have facilitated community support for the refugee service agencies that assist refugees in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
“We recognize these remarkable individuals for their accomplishments and contributions not only to North Texas, but to the global community,” said Shabnam Modgil, president, UNA-USA Dallas. “To our Global Goals, Local Leader Award recipients, whose work help thousands of people to live better lives, we honor you.”
The UN Day Reception and Awards is a one-of-a-kind event that brings together community leaders, educators, legislators, and faith and nonprofit organizations. Attendees engage on global affairs, civil and social justice, human rights, and much more. The 2018 keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Levi Bautista, Assistant General Secretary for UN Ministry and International Affairs of the General Board of Church and Society of The United Methodist Church. Rev. Bautista has written, spoken, and led conferences extensively on issues of migration, refugees, and human rights for more than the 23 years.
