2017 Commencement Activities Planned for Perkins School of Theology
Perkins School of Theology will honor graduating seniors with a variety of events, including Dr. C. Michael Hawn, University Distinguished Professor of Church Music and director of the Sacred Music Program, as preacher for the May 20 Celebration of Degrees and Academic Achievements.
DALLAS (SMU) – Perkins School of Theology will honor graduating seniors with a variety of events, including Dr. C. Michael Hawn, University Distinguished Professor of Church Music and director of the Sacred Music Program, as preacher for the May 20 Celebration of Degrees and Academic Achievements.
Ninety-seven students are scheduled to receive their SMU diplomas from Perkins (15 December graduates, 70 May graduates and 12 summer graduates.)

Friday, May 19:
• 5 p.m. Senior Class Worship, Perkins Chapel.
• 6:30 p.m. Senior Class Dinner, Great Hall of Highland Park UMC (3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205).
Saturday, May 20:
• 9 a.m. Commencement in Moody Coliseum will feature Dr. Francis S. Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health who may be best known for leading the Human Genome Project as the commencement speakers.

• From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Bridwell Library will be open for visits from family, friends and other guests.
• 2 p.m. The Celebration of Degrees and Academic Achievements, in the sanctuary of Highland Park UMC, features Dr. C. Michael Hawn, University Distinguished Professor of Church Music and director of the Sacred Music Program.
Guests are welcome and no tickets are required. Guests may be seated when the doors open at 1 p.m. The event will be live-streamed via webcast at www.hpumconline.org/perkins.
• 3:30 p.m. Reception in the Great Hall of Prothro Hall is free for graduates and their guests, as well as Perkins faculty, staff and students. The reception begins immediately following the presentation of diplomas during the Celebration of Degrees and Academic Achievements.

Perkins School of Theology, founded in 1911, is one of five official University-related schools of theology of The United Methodist Church. Degree programs include the Master of Divinity, Master of Sacred Music, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Ministry, Doctor of Ministry and Doctor of Pastoral Music, as well as the Ph.D., in cooperation with The Graduate Program in Religious Studies at SMU’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences.
