Chancey Honored as Guggenheim Fellow

Dr. Mark Chancey, a Professor of Religious Studies at SMU and a member of the Graduate Program in Religious Studies faculty, recently was selected as a Guggenheim Fellow. The award, given by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, grants individuals a minimum of six months and a maximum of 12 months to work on a research project of their choosing.

Chancey will use his Guggenheim Fellowship to continue work on his next monograph, The Good Book as Textbook: Teaching about the Bible in American Public Schools. Chancey will explore the legal, political and academic issues raised by K-12 Bible courses while tracing their evolution from the early twentieth century to the present. 

Chancey was one of two SMU professors (along with Dr. Adam Herring, chair of SMU’s department of art history) among the 173 scholars selected as Guggenheim Fellows. Other faculty members with ties to Perkins who previously were chosen for the honor include Schubert Ogden (1962), Van Harvey (1966) and Robin Lovin (1987).

Degree programs include the Master of Divinity, Master of Sacred Music, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Ministry, Master of Theology, Doctor of Ministry, and Doctor of Pastoral Music as well as the Ph.D., in cooperation with the Graduate Program in Religious Studies at SMU’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences.
