Perkins to Offer Houston Lay School of Theology on Saturday, Aug. 13
The Elizabeth Scurlock University Professor of Human Values at SMU will present "The Christian, the Church and the Public Good" on Saturday, Aug. 13, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
The day-long workshop -- scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church (5510 Main St.) -- is sponsored by the Office of External Programs at Perkins School of Theology in cooperation with the Center for Congregational Excellence of the Texas Annual Conference.
Dr. Curran is a social ethicist and the author of more than 300 publications on Catholic moral theology, social ethics and the role of the Church as a moral and political actor in society. Topics that will be covered include the social mission of the Church, the role of the individual Christian in this mission and ways the Church works for the public good.
The Houston Lay School of Theology meets each February and August, offering an opportunity for laity and others to explore issues of spirituality, theology and church leadership with faculty from Perkins. The program is made possible in part by the Howard-Holbert Endowment at SMU.
Advance registration is available through Aug. 8 for $65, with onsite registration costing $75. Continuing-education credit (.5 CEU) also is available for an additional $25. Perkins School of Theology, founded in 1911, is one of five official University-related schools of theology of The United Methodist Church.
