Perkins Presents Free "Lunch & Learn" in Houston: April 21, 2014
Dr. Tom Spann on "Internship: Doing Ministry and Theology In the Traffic at the Intersection"
DALLAS – Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University presents a Lunch & Learn event Monday, April 21, 2014, from 11:45 am – 1:00 pm. This free event will be held at the location of Perkins School of Theology’s Houston-Galveston Extension Program, 3501 W. Alabama, Suite 107, in Houston.

This Lunch & Learn event features Dr. Thomas Spann, professor of Supervised Ministry at Perkins, with a presentation titled Internship: Doing Ministry and Theology In the Traffic at the Intersection. With four full-time Intern Faculty members, the Perkins Intern Program is widely recognized as an exemplary program in preparing persons for effective ministry. Internships help students integrate the knowledge and theological reflection disciplines learned in the classroom with the practical demands of providing faithful hands-on leadership within a congregation or church agency.
“Theological reflection upon the practice of ministry is not limited to a solo affair,” says Dr. Spann. “Theological reflection during the internship is the art of naming God’s presence in the traffic of human experiences. The traffic includes life and death, sickness and wellness, successes and failures, power plays and prayerful contemplation.” Dr. Spann adds, “Ministry is done at the intersection. Therefore, theological reflection is also done in the thick of daily life.”
The Houston-Galveston Extension Program of Perkins School of Theology, which periodically hosts Lunch & Learn events for prospective students, also welcomes alumni, friends and any other guests who might be interested.
