Nakoya Moss named Assistant Dean for Marketing and Communications
Nakoya Moss has joined Perkins School of Theology as Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications
DALLAS (SMU) –Nakoya Moss, a marketing communications leader with extensive experience in non-profit and higher education sectors, has joined Perkins School of Theology as Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications, effective October 7, 2024. In this role, Moss will lead Perkins’ strategic marketing and communication efforts to elevate the school’s profile and enhance engagement with diverse audiences.
Moss brings a deep passion for mission-driven work, particularly in theological education. “Having grown up in a faith community, I understand the vital role that institutions like Perkins play in shaping ethical, informed leaders,” said Moss. “I am excited about the opportunity to bring my skills in marketing and communications to support Perkins School of Theology’s mission of making theological education accessible and impactful.”
Moss earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and International Studies from the University of Missouri at Columbia and a Master of Arts in Emerging Media and Communication from the University of Texas at Dallas. She has a proven track record in developing targeted campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences, enhance brand visibility, and foster community connections.
In her previous role as Director of Marketing at Communities Foundation of Texas, Moss led a team in crafting and executing comprehensive marketing plans, managing cross-functional collaborations, and driving engagement through traditional and digital channels.
The Assistant Dean for Marketing and Communications is a newly established position, focused on promoting Perkins School of Theology and expanding its visibility through forward-thinking marketing initiatives. Moss’s expertise in strategic marketing, content creation, and project management aligns with the goals of this role.
“The order of words is significant,” said Dr. Hugo Magallanes, Dean ad interim of Perkins School of Theology at SMU. “We always want to tell the story of Perkins and our incredible alumni, and we need innovative marketing to reach new audiences.”
Moss’s qualifications also include proficiency in project management, social media, email marketing, photography, graphic design, branding, and content management systems. She is committed to leveraging these skills to support Perkins’ enrollment and event goals, ensuring cohesive and effective marketing strategies across all platforms.
“Nakoya understands strategic priorities and has implemented creative marketing with an emphasis on storytelling,” said Christina Rhodes, Assistant Dean of Enrollment Management and chair of the search committee. “During the interview, she was already asking questions and crafting solutions for some of our challenges.”
Moss is eager to apply her creative vision and communications expertise to advance Perkins mission. “Storytelling is at the heart of what we do, and I’m thrilled to help amplify the voices and stories of Perkins’ students, faculty, and alumni,” said Nakoya.

Perkins School of Theology, founded in 1911, is one of five official University-related schools of theology of The United Methodist Church. Degree programs include the Master of Divinity, Master of Sacred Music, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Ministry, Master of Theology, Doctor of Ministry, and Doctor of Pastoral Music as well as the Ph.D., in cooperation with The Graduate Program in Religious Studies at SMU's Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences.
