About the Collection

The Texas Artists: Paintings, Sculpture, and Works on Paper digital collection is a joint project between five libraries and museums in Dallas and Austin containing more than 2,300 digitized paintings, sculpture and works on paper that are held by the five institutions. The partners are the Bywaters Special Collections (SMU); the Dallas Museum of Art; Dallas Public Library’s Dallas History & Archives Division; the Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin; and the Meadows Museum (SMU).

Artists’ Sketchbooks

There are three complete sketchbooks by Jerrry Bywaters: Sketchbook 01 (Colorado), Sketchbook: 02 (Colorado), and Sketchbook: 03 (New Mexico, Arizona)

There are nine complete sketchbooks from DeForrest Judd: Colorado; Gulf Coast; Caddo Lake; Taos '67; Big Bend; Big Bend, Hill Country, Caddo Lake; Mexico '68; Caddo; and Colorado '66.

There are 5 sketchbooks or sets of sketches from Everett Spruce: ; Make-A-Note brand sketchbook; [The Spiral Sketch Book brand sketchbook]; E. Spruce Sketches 1931-32 sketchbook; Loose individual sketches, ca. 1939-1940; Rembrandt Oil and Water Colors brand sketchbook, ca. 1940-1941; Scribbletex notepad, 1945-1946; and Ennis Figure Pads brand sketchbook, ca. 1950.

There is a sketchbook by Edward Eisenlohr: Encyclopadie des Landwirthschaft (Encyclopedia of Agriculture), and his illustrated storybook Ein Verlobungs - Epos des Glycerinus Bombenmeier. (Epic Poem for the Betrothal of Glycerinus and Bombenmeier.).
