ECO Abroad

Study Abroad is a great opportunity to learn and explore the world.  If you are interested in going abroad, you must work with both the SMU Abroad Office and your Economics advisor.

  • For more information about how to apply, course offerings, program information, how to create and submit the PPOS, etc. please contact the Abroad office at abroad@smu.edu.
  • For questions about whether you can spend a semester abroad and still graduate on time, read the below, complete your calculator, and watch this video.  Then complete the exercise described in the video.  If you still have questions, email your calculator to alyssawong@smu.edu.

Here is some guidance to help get you started:

  • You will not receive ECO major credit during semester abroad programs.  Currently, only the summer LSE program offers ECO major credit.
  • If you choose a semester program, your best option is to instead take as many CC requirements and/or minor (if applicable) courses as possible.
  • If you don’t know which CC and/or minor requirements you are missing, view your DPR or use the new Degree Planner tool.

  • It is your responsibility to confirm with the minor advisor that abroad courses fill minor requirements.
  • It is also your responsibility to ask the minor advisor which courses you should take abroad, if you need guidance.
  • The business minor advisor is Barbara Mohrle bmohrle@mail.cox.smu.edu

  • Then work with the Abroad office to see if courses are offered that fill your missing requirements, and complete and submit your PPOS form.  The PPOS is sent to multiple parties, including your advisor (Alyssa Wong), for review.

Finally, do not wait until the last minute to apply.  You may jeopardize going abroad if you try to complete the process last minute.
