Junior Maria Murad, who is triple majoring in Corporate/Business Communications, French Language and Literature, and Creative Computing, was offered an internship with Fisher Investments at the end of the spring semester, to begin in the fall 2024. Murad shared with us how the opportunity came about and what the application and interviewing process was like.

The Internship

The position is a part-time Service and Operations Junior Associate role at Fisher Investments. This position is designed for college students near the Fisher campus in Plano, Texas, offering a flexible schedule of at least 20 hours per week. Reporting directly to a Team Leader, responsibilities include delivering exceptional customer service to internal business groups, scheduling client interactions, handling operational tasks for account onboarding and maintenance, and updating internal resources with exposure to managing large datasets. The role promises a vibrant atmosphere, emphasizing meritocracy, where collaboration is valued. Opportunities for growth include exposure to upper management and a collaborative work environment.

Application and Interviewing

Murad’s journey started when she attended the "EmpowerHER: Elevate Your Negotiation Game," an event hosted by the Hegi Family Career Development Center and the Women & LGBT Office. This workshop was held by Sarah Ames, an early recruiting specialist at Fisher Investments, where she provided students with the tools to enhance their negotiation skills and make informed career decisions. After the event, Murad had the chance to talk with Ames about her career aspirations post-graduation, and Ames suggested she apply for the part-time role, recognizing it as an opportunity to gain early exposure to the working world. This position aligns with Murad’s long-term goal of pursuing a career in project management within the financial services industry.

Within the next few weeks, Murad received communication from HR and progressed through three interview stages, including two phone calls and one video interview. During these interviews, she engaged with various representatives to discuss her interests at Fisher, the potential environment's benefits and how her skills align with what she can contribute to the team. Through these interactions, Murad gained insight into Fisher's culture and operations while emphasizing her enthusiasm for the financial services industry and her eagerness to contribute positively to the team dynamic.

Murad is incredibly excited to start and be a part of the Fisher Investments team!
