Opal Lee, known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Southern Methodist University on May 11, 2024. At 97 years old, she stood proudly in SMU's brilliant academic robes before thousands of graduates and their families, becoming a Mustang and further cementing her legacy.
